Hospice Nurses Scholarship Fund Launches

We're proud to launch the House of Travel Hospice Nurses Scholarship Fund in partnership with House of Travel.

Every day, more than 660 hospice nurses across New Zealand provide compassionate, specialist care to people with life-limiting illnesses and the families who support them. Their work is invaluable, requiring additional postgraduate study beyond undergraduate nursing qualifications.

Non-Profits welcome new government Strategy for New Zealand’s 1m+ family carers

The Carers Alliance of 60 national NGOs, including Hospice NZ have welcomed the Government’s commitment to a new Mahi Aroha Carers’ Strategy Action Plan.
More than a million New Zealanders care for friends and family members who are frail, unwell, or have a health condition or disability. 
“Being a carer is a role we can all expect to have or rely on during our lives.  It's a role that also has a financial and wellbeing toll,” says Wayne Naylor, CEO Hospice NZ.
The new Strategy and its rolling Action Plan take New Zealand into the future, with multiple agencies committing to valuing and supporting carers.

Charitable Op Shops - a $78M contribution to communities

Last night at Parliament we celebrated the launch of Charitable Reuse Aotearoa, a new collaboration between seven of New Zealand's largest charitable reuse organisations, working together to highlight the extraordinary impact of op shops across Aotearoa. 
The first-ever Aotearoa New Zealand Reuse Impact Study shows that charitable op shops across the country:
•    Reused 46.9 million items in one year
•    Kept 41,300 tonnes of goods out of landfill
•    Saved New Zealand households an estimated $844 million through affordable second-hand goods
•    Reinvested $78 million into social and community services, including hospice care
•    Were powered by more than 1,550 full-time equivalent volunteers alongside 1,322 paid staff.

Hospice New Zealand welcomes targeted funding to improve fairness and access to hospice care

Hospice New Zealand has welcomed Minister of Health’s announcement of an additional $12 million Health New Zealand funding uplift for hospice services in 2026/27, saying the funding represents an important step towards a fairer and more equitable hospice system for New Zealanders.

Dying Reviews Shortlisted for International Award

Our world first Dying Reviews campaign has been recognised by Cannes Lions this week, shortlisted for a prestigious ‘Glass Lion’ in the 2026 awards that take place at the end of June.

This award recognises work that confronts inequality and prejudice by giving voice to marginalised communities.
 
We know Dying isn’t an exception to life - it's part of it. And it deserves dignity, honesty, and attention. 

Thanks to the creative team at McCann NZ for their pro bono, ambitious and creative genius. 

We hope this international recognition shines a light on the need for compassion over process and designing systems with dignity for the dying in mind.

Hospice is Wrap Around Love

Firstly, Wayne challenged a common myth about hospice care. Hospice care does not mostly happen in hospice buildings. Most hospice care happens in people’s homes, around kitchen tables, in lounge chairs, beside hospital beds or lazy boys supplied brought into the living rooms, and surrounded by the people and things that matter most. Hospice is not just a building. It is compassionate care that wraps around people and whānau wherever they are as we've been sharing in our 
Hospice Awareness campaign this week.

The annual Farmers Christmas Campaign has once again delivered an outstanding result for hospices nationwide, thanks to the generosity of Farmers stores and customers across New Zealand.  The campaign has raised vital funds to help ensure people can access compassionate end of life care in their communities.

Demand is increasing, care needs are becoming more complex, and without urgent action, too many people will miss out on the compassionate, high-quality end-of-life care they deserve. As a country, we need a reform in palliative care, for people, for whānau, and for the future of dying well in Aotearoa.
