Dr Lucy Hone, renowned author of Resilient Grieving is soon to publish a Coping with Loss @Work Guide.
In this Guide you'll be able to find out more about how to better prepare your workplace for dealing with bereavement – not only supporting the individuals facing loss, but across the board. As Dr Lucy says, bereavement support makes good sense and aligns with all our efforts to humanise the workplace.
“Helping a co-worker through their darkest days and giving them the time, space and flexibility they need to grieve, increases the likelihood they will be able and willing to return to work when the time comes. Conversely, preventing them from doing so means you’re more likely to have a dis-engaged employee, less able to keep up with their responsibilities, less inclined to ask for help, and less productive due to the misery and stress. Grief doesn’t just affect us emotionally, but practically, cognitively, socially and physically too. Give them space and flexibility, show them you care, and their absence is less likely to be costly (in every sense of the word) in the long run.”
