Who can be a member of Hospice NZ?

Following the review of the Hospice NZ Rules in 2019 it was confirmed there are four categories of membership to Hospice NZ.

• Member Organisations
• Associate Organisations
• Individual Members
• Honorary Members

1. Member Organisations:

A community owned, registered charitable organisation providing palliative care services without charge for people with a life limiting or life-threatening condition in compliance with Hospice NZ Standards for the Provision of Palliative Care.

Member Organisations are required to pay an annual membership subscription based on a formula determined by the Annual General meeting which substantially includes a percentage of their income received from a current DHB Service Agreement for the provision of specialist palliative care or be an Associate Organisation which pays an annual subscription in accordance with a formula determined by the Annual General meeting.

2. Associate Organisations:


A community owned, registered charitable organisation providing components of palliative care services without charge for people with a life limiting or life-threatening condition in compliance with Hospice NZ standards for the provision of palliative care.
Associate Organisations pay an annual subscription in accordance with a formula determined by the Annual General meeting.
NOTE: For Member & Associate Organisations criteria

The criteria for both categories of membership are:

• A not-for-profit community owned hospice providing palliative care services without charge to patients, families and whanau.
• Maintains Charities Commission registration.
• Complies with the Hospice NZ Code of Conduct.
• Is committed to cooperate and work in partnership with Hospice NZ.

3. Individual Members:
Any person with an interest in hospice palliative care may join Hospice NZ and pay an annual subscription by a formula determined by the Annual General meeting. Many of our individual members support a regional hospice but also want to be informed and involved with developments at a national level. Individual members will benefit by having access to education projects and programmes and, a discounted registration at the biennial palliative care conference. 4. Honorary Life Members:
A person or organisation on whom this honour has been conferred. Honorary Life Members do not pay an annual subscription. The Trust Board may at any time receive nominations from any party (members/non-members) for a person or an organisation to be made an Honorary Life Member. The Board shall confer Honorary Membership in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the hospice and palliative care movement at a national level. The recipients shall be announced at the Annual General Meeting of Hospice NZ.
An Honorary Life Member
a. shall be entitled to be present and to speak, but not vote at General Meetings of Hospice NZ.
b. shall not be required to pay an annual subscription or meeting or conference fee.
c. may have their status rescinded at the discretion of the Trust Board.

Benefits of membership to Hospice NZ – Member & Associate Organisations:

  • Professionalism/Standards Ensure the maintenance of ethical standards and practice. Access and support for the Hospice NZ Standards for Palliative Care.
  • Assurance To the public, the community and funders of our members’ professionalism and experience.
  • Education Access to all professional development resources and programmes developed by Hospice NZ. Access and involvement in all national networking opportunities, Conferences and meetings.
  • Networking Opportunities to share information and develop professional and social contacts at local, regional, national and international levels.
  • Resources Access to all resources and publications from Hospice NZ
  • Situations vacant Opportunities in palliative care are publicised free to members. If you wish to advertise a vacancy through the Hospice New Website, please email [email protected]
  • Fundraising and awareness Involvement in all national fundraising and awareness activities (where possible) and subsequent financial benefits. Representation in all awareness raising campaigns/work.
  • National advocacy Representation in all discussions with Government relating to funding and service provision.
  • Use of the term “Hospice” Unrestricted use of the term “Hospice” in describing services or facilities.

Benefits of membership to Hospice NZ – Individual Membership:

Access to education projects and programmes and, a discounted registration at the biennial palliative care conference.

Voting

  • Member Organisations are entitled to vote at the AGM & Special Meetings of Hospice NZ.
  • Associate, Honorary & Individual members are not entitled to vote at the AGM & Special Meetings of Hospice NZ.
