Hospice Awareness Week 2024

People are missing out on hospice care - we’re on a mission to change it.

Do you or someone you know fear hospice care? Let's clear up the misconceptions!

At Hospice, we want to help everyone understand that hospice isn't just about dying — it's about living every moment to the fullest.

This Hospice Awareness Week, we're sharing real stories from patients and families who have experienced the compassionate care and support of hospice. By sharing these stories, we hope to break down the fear and stigma surrounding hospice services.

Last year, around a third of New Zealanders who died received hospice care. However, there are still many who miss out due to funding and workforce challenges, as well as misunderstandings about what hospice care truly offers.

It's time to ensure that everyone knows hospice care is available for them and their families, whenever and wherever they need it.

Let's spread the word and make sure everyone can access the care and support they deserve.

Meet Israel

“Hospice came on-board at the right time. They didn’t dictate how we run things in our house. Their awareness to come into our whare and to support us in the worst time of our lives was very sensitive, very patient, and very supportive. We really looked forward to them coming and, to a larger extent, depending on them being there”

Meet Baden

“I’ve never been afraid of dying, it’s just how. Embrace Hospice, because it will be a magical thing you will do. To help you and your family”

Meet Erin and Graham

“It’s really good to get in touch with hospice and be introduced to them before you feel like you need to. That really challenged our perspective of what hospice could offer. There is support for that period; for the life that you have left before you get to end of life.”

What if Hospice care was available for everyone who needed it, when they need it?

Hospice care is needed more than ever and here's why.

  • Last year, 38,000 people died in New Zealand.
  • Around 90% (34,200) had a foreseeable death that could have benefited from palliative care.
  • Hospice cared for nearly 1/3 of those people (10,800), but many dying people are still missing out on hospice care.
  • Hospice supports family and whānau as well as the patient. Nearly a million (1 in 5) New Zealanders cared for a loved one who was dying in the past two years.
  • Nationally, hospices raised over $94 million last year to fill the gap in government funding to keep hospice services free-of-charge.

We want to reach those people who are missing out, but we need your help to do it.

“Even if it’s just $5 whatever you can put towards hospice. Please please do. It’s an amazing organisation it really really is” – Baden, Hospice patient.
